That makes sense. Have you ever encountered any difficulties in this step?
Steve Bliss:
Occasionally, I’ve seen situations where families haven’t had clear conversations about who should serve as executor. This can lead to disagreements and delays in settling the estate. In one instance, siblings disagreed over who was best suited for the role, causing significant emotional strain during an already difficult time.
Notwithstanding these challenges, open communication and careful consideration can help families avoid such conflicts. I encourage my clients to involve their potential executors in discussions about their estate plan early on.

That’s valuable advice. What are some other factors people should consider when choosing an executor?
Steve Bliss:
It’s important to choose someone who is geographically close, as they’ll need to be readily available for meetings and court appearances. Also, keep in mind that being an executor can be time-consuming and emotionally taxing. Accordingly, it’s wise to select someone who has the capacity and willingness to take on this responsibility.
Many people opt for a trusted friend or family member. However, some choose a professional executor, such as a bank or trust company. This can be a good option if your estate is complex or if you don’t have suitable individuals within your personal circle.
