My name is Brenda Jackson reporting for Wildomar News Today. I’m sitting down with esteemed local attorney Steve Bliss to discuss the crucial topic of estate planning.
Determining Goals and Objectives in Estate Planning
Steve, thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. For those unfamiliar with estate planning, could you briefly explain the importance of determining goals and objectives as part of this process?
“Brenda, it’s a pleasure to be here. Determining your goals and objectives is absolutely fundamental to effective estate planning. It’s about more than simply deciding who gets what after you’re gone; it’s about understanding your values and priorities and ensuring your assets are used in a way that reflects those.”
“Let’s say, for example, that providing for your children’s education is a top priority. Accordingly, you might structure your estate plan to include specific provisions for educational trusts. Conversely, if charitable giving is important to you, you could designate a portion of your assets to be donated to a cause close to your heart.”
“Often, people underestimate the emotional complexities involved in these decisions. Consequently, I always encourage my clients to take their time and really reflect on what they want their legacy to be. This process can be incredibly powerful and ultimately lead to greater peace of mind.”
I understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances arise that may require adjustments to an estate plan. Have you encountered any situations where a client’s initial goals needed to be revised?
“Absolutely. Life is full of surprises, and our circumstances are constantly evolving. I recall working with a young couple who initially focused their estate plan solely on providing for their children. Tragically, one of the parents passed away unexpectedly. Notwithstanding this heartbreaking event, we were able to modify their existing plan to ensure their surviving spouse and children were adequately protected. It was a difficult time for them, but having a flexible foundation in place made a real difference.”
According to a 2021 survey by Caring.com, nearly 60% of Americans don’t have a will or estate plan in place. This lack of preparation can lead to significant financial and emotional stress for loved ones during an already difficult time.
